Water Resources Engineer – Ames, Iowa
WHKS has an opportunity for a Water Resources Engineer to use their knowledge and skills in the design and management of environmental projects in Iowa and surrounding states. The successful candidate will be technically proficient, personable, and value a collaborative work environment focused on creating solutions for our clients and communities. Responsibilities Include:
- Analysis and development of technically complex hydrologic and hydraulic computer models
- Designing stormwater detention/retention systems
- Designing stormwater best management practices for water quality purposes
- Evaluation of proposed modifications to existing water control structures
- Plan and specification preparation and review
- Preparation of reports, letters, and technical memos
- Preparation of permit applications, including 404 permitting and Iowa DNR floodplain permitting
- Participation in meetings with consultants, other governmental agencies, and the public
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in civil or agricultural engineering
- Ability to work with others as well as independently
- Strong organizational, verbal, and written communication skills
- Minimum of four years of professional experience in water resources engineering or related field
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in Iowa, or ability to obtain within 6 months
- Proficient in the use of ArcMap (GIS) or AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Experience
- Ability to perform floodplain mapping
- 2D hydraulic modeling experience
- An understanding of Iowa drainage rules and regulations
- Design of agricultural BMPs related to storm water and water quality
- Open channel and pressure pipe network modeling
- Experience with wetland regulation and wetland banking
