Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan and Design

MASON CITY, IOWA

The City of Mason City developed a multi-phase program to complete the trail system identified in the City’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. WHKS designed numerous improvements to the existing trail system which was comprised of 20 segments encompassing a large area of the City.

Improvements included minor intersection redesign, rehabilitation and widening of existing trail segments, and design of new trail segments. The project was designed using AASHTO Standards and meets ADA and FHWA requirements.

WHKS reviewed trail segments with City staff and grouped projects into multiple construction packages. The project included an extensive survey effort and preparation of easements. WHKS also participated in public outreach activities including community meetings and City Council workshops.

The project required permit applications for work in the Iowa Department of Transportation and railroad right-of-way. Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Corps of Engineers permitting was required.

The trail segments are accessible to all users and is enjoyed year-round by hikers, bicyclists, runners/walkers, and outdoor enthusiasts. The functionality of the trail system promotes overall wellness and civic involvement.
