Veteran's Memorial Plaza
DUBUQUE, IOWA
WHKS provided survey, civil, and structural design services for a pedestrian bridge and site improvements to the Chaplain Schmitt Island Veteran’s Memorial Plaza. Improvements included seating, space for additional memorials and tributes, a pedestrian bridge, and enhancements to the pond.
The pedestrian bridge houses a decorative swirling concrete path that transforms into a three-span elevated curved boardwalk bridge extending to a pier platform over the pond. WHKS prepared a structural evaluation for a 24-foot circular landing sculpture titled ‘Skyward’ which is located at the end of the boardwalk. The sculpture stands in honor of Chaplain Aloysius Schmitt, who died in Pearl Harbor.
The project was the recipient of the Commercial/Industrial Decorative Category Award for the 2021 Excellence in Concrete Awards presented by the Iowa Ready Mixed Concrete Association and American Concrete Institute-Iowa Chapter.
