Flood Control Study

Flood Control Study

SHEFFIELD, IOWA

WHKS evaluated the Sheffield stormwater collection and conveyance systems for the drainage area included in the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM).

FEMA had recently made updates to the maps, resulting in a portion of the City being added to the 100-year flood zone. The revised flood zone included multiple areas within the City, requiring impacted residents to purchase flood insurance.

WHKS examined hydraulic data and developed alternatives to remove impacted areas from the updated flood zone. A partial site survey of the area determined storm sewer and culvert locations, pipe sizes, cross sections, and elevations. WHKS prepared an Engineer’s Report summarizing the existing conditions, capacity of the system, recommendations on flood control/drainage projects, and system improvements. The report included recommendations for completing a FEMA Conditional Letter of Map Revision (CLOMR) to be followed up by a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR).
