WHKS prepared a structural condition report for the ImOn Arena (formerly Mystique Community Ice Center), a 63,000 square foot pre-engineered steel building frame, with a 200′-0 clear span, supported by a deep foundation system comprised of reinforced concrete grade beams, pile caps, and driven steel piles.
The facility is located on Chaplain Schmitt Island and began experiencing issues due to apparent settlement. The island is known to have been used as a landfill in the past and the weight of the facility structure was too heavy for the underlying soil.
WHKS performed a visual site inspection of the facility to assess and document the condition of the structural elements. During the site inspection, engineers observed issues including separation between structural elements, cracking in floor slabs, cracking in CMU walls, and horizontal separation between CMU walls. A laser scan was performed of the interior of the building to create a record of the existing elevations for use as a baseline for the evaluation of any future settlement concerns.
Additionally, WHKS provided structural design for the remediation of the settlement repairs which were constructed on an accelerated timeline.
